Heartburn occurs when acid from the stomach escapes back into the esophagus, causing a burning sensation in the middle of the chest. It is one of the main symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). GERD is a known risk factor for esophageal cancer.

Barrett’s esophagus is a pre-cancerous condition caused by chronic GERD. Over time, exposure to stomach acid may injure the cells lining the esophagus, causing them to mutate into pre-cancerous tissue. Individuals who develop Barrett’s esophagus are 50 times more likely to develop esophageal cancer, and require close medical monitoring of this condition.
